What AEO actually looks like in practice.

What AEO actually is — and why most SEO teams are measuring the wrong things.

AEO is the practice of being retrieved and cited by answer engines — Perplexity, ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews, Claude, Copilot, Grok — rather than appearing in a traditional ten-blue-links SERP. The success metric is not ranking position; it is citation share.

This matters because a growing share of commercial research never reaches a traditional SERP. A buyer evaluating "best marketing agencies for real estate in Dubai" in 2026 may ask Perplexity, read a synthesised answer with five citations, and never click through. If your brand is not in the citation pool, you do not exist to that buyer.

Most SEO teams in 2026 are still measuring position-tracking for a dozen head terms and reporting it as the full picture. The ground has shifted. Position-tracking is a declining signal; citation presence is the growing one.

The signals that get a brand into the AI citation pool.

Structured, factual, specific content. Pages that answer a question with a direct answer in the first paragraph, back it with specific numbers, and cite primary sources. LLMs retrieve from pages that look like structured encyclopaedia entries — not pages optimised for exact-match keyword density.

Entity presence. Wikipedia, Wikidata, Crunchbase, LinkedIn company pages, G2, Clutch, DesignRush, local chambers. The entity graph the LLM references is not Google's index — it is a different, overlapping, broader set.

Citation-shaped markup. FAQ schema, HowTo schema, Article schema with author entities, published dates, and clear topical hierarchy. This is not just SEO hygiene — it is the shape LLMs prefer to retrieve.

Seeded into the pool. Being quoted in authoritative third-party sources — publications, podcasts, industry reports, Reddit threads with high upvote velocity. The LLMs do not just read the open web; they ingest and weight signals from specific trusted surfaces.

AEO is not SEO with a new logo. The signals, the surfaces and the success metrics are different enough that measuring one from inside the other is a category error.

The surfaces that matter — and how they differ.

Perplexity is the most citation-visible of the major engines. Every answer surfaces 3-7 sources with visible attribution. Perplexity's crawler is one of the most important bots to allow in robots.txt in 2026.

ChatGPT Search cites sources but increasingly synthesises without citation on short queries. Being retrievable requires presence in OpenAI's web index, which overlaps with but is distinct from Google's.

Google AI Overviews blends traditional SERP signals with generative output. Being cited in AI Overviews correlates with high-authority traditional SEO performance, but is not identical.

Claude cites sparingly in product form, but is heavily used by professional buyers researching complex B2B categories. Appearing in Claude's answers requires presence in the training-adjacent web, which weights authoritative publication sources heavily.

Microsoft Copilot and Grok have smaller citation surfaces but matter for Enterprise and X-native audiences respectively.

The practical AEO work — what to actually do this quarter.

Rebuild your top 20 pages for AEO. Direct-answer first paragraph. Specific numbers. Primary-source citations. FAQ schema. Clear topical hierarchy. Named author with Author schema and a LinkedIn-linked entity.

Allow the AI crawlers in robots.txt. PerplexityBot, ChatGPT-User, OAI-SearchBot, Googlebot (for AI Overviews), ClaudeBot. Many brands are silently blocked by legacy robots.txt rules that pre-date the 2024-2025 wave.

Fix entity presence. Wikipedia if genuinely notable, Wikidata always, LinkedIn with full profile, Crunchbase, your trade's authoritative directories. Audit for consistency across them.

Track citation share. Weekly runs of your 50 priority queries across Perplexity, ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews. Count whether your brand is in the citation pool. Report it as the primary metric.

What AEO maturity looks like in 2027 — a bet.

By 2027, we expect AEO citation share to be a primary KPI on marketing dashboards across the ambitious half of the market, with traditional SERP tracking relegated to a secondary signal in competitive categories. We expect purpose-built AEO tooling to replace Semrush and Ahrefs as the primary visibility suite for brands that take the discipline seriously.

We also expect the gap between brands that invested in AEO in 2025-2026 and brands that waited until 2027 to be larger than the equivalent gap in SEO investment timing. The compounding is sharper, because the citation pool is small and growing selection-sensitive.

The upside for GCC brands is specific: the AEO citation competition in Arabic is thinner than in English. A brand that invests in Arabic AEO in 2026 is competing for citations against a far smaller pool than the equivalent English market. This is the clearest leverage move we see for GCC marketers who read this and act within the quarter.

  1. Audit robots.txt. Allow PerplexityBot, ChatGPT-User, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, Googlebot. Fix today.
  2. Rebuild top 20 pages for AEO. Direct-answer intro, specific numbers, FAQ schema, named author with Author entity schema.
  3. Fix entity graph. Wikipedia (if notable), Wikidata, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, your trade directories. Consistency across all.
  4. Start tracking citation share. 50 priority queries, weekly runs across Perplexity, ChatGPT Search, AI Overviews. Report monthly.
  5. Invest in Arabic AEO. The citation pool is thinner and the compounding window is wider. This is the GCC-specific move.
